🇳🇱 A Quick Introduction to the Netherlands & The Dutch Language

The Netherlands is known for windmills, canals, bikes, and an open, international mindset. But behind that welcoming image is a strong expectation: if you want to integrate, contribute, or thrive — you need to speak Dutch.

The Dutch language (Nederlands) is a West Germanic language spoken by over 23 million people, mostly in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Though it shares roots with English and German, it has its own unique rhythm, rules, and idioms — which can make it a challenge for learners, especially when it comes to word order and pronunciation.

You can read more about the Dutch language here.

📜 A Short History of the NT2 Staatsexamen

The NT2 State Exam was introduced in the early 1990s by the Dutch Ministry of Education.

It was designed to test the language skills of non-native adults who wanted to study or work in the Netherlands — especially in professional or academic environments.

Today, the exam is part of the broader civic integration system, but it also serves as a standalone qualification for highly skilled migrants, international students, and long-term residents.

📈 Who Takes the Exam — and Why?

Each year, around 15,000 to 20,000 people take the NT2 State Exam.

The number has increased steadily due to:

Growing immigration and international work/study opportunities
Integration requirements for long-term residency or Dutch citizenship
Personal goals: better job prospects, education access, or cultural connection

Common reasons people take the exam:

Apply for Dutch nationality

Enroll in Dutch higher education (HBO or university)

Get a better job or meet work visa requirements

Show official proof of language skills to an employer or government agency

💾 What Is the NT2 State Exam?

The NT2 State Exam assesses whether your Dutch language skills are sufficient for professional or academic contexts. There are two programs:

Program I (B1 level): for vocational work and daily life

Program II (B2 level): for higher education and more advanced work environments

Find out more about CEFR levels here.

You choose the level that matches your goal. Each program has four parts:

1. Reading (Lezen)

2.Listening (Luisteren)

3.Writing (Schrijven)

4.Speaking (Spreken)

Each skill is tested individually, and you must pass all four to receive your diploma.

🧠 What Are the Most Difficult Parts According To Our Students?

Many of the candidates and students we help to pass the NT2 tell us that they struggle with:

Writing in Dutch (Schrijven)
You must write clear, structured, grammatically correct texts
Mistakes in word order, spelling, or logic can cost big points

Speaking in Dutch (Spreken)
Especially in Program II (B2), fluency, pronunciation, and coherence matter
Speaking into a microphone during the test can feel unnatural or stressful

Time pressure
All sections are timed, and many test-takers feel rushed — especially in reading and writing

Exam nerves
Even our most well-prepared students and candidates sometimes underperform due to anxiety on the day.

❌ How Many People Pass the Dutch NT2 Staatsexamen – And How Many Don’t?

According to DUO and the CvTE (exam board), pass rates vary each year, but roughly:

60–70% pass all parts on the first try
Others need to retake one or more parts — which is allowed

Writing and speaking are the most frequently failed components.

The good news? You can retake only the parts you failed.
The better news? Most candidates pass the second time with the right preparation. This is where where we can also be of assistance.

Why Does the Dutch Government Require To Pass The Dutch NT2 Staatsexamen

The Dutch government sees language as key to:

Economic participation
Social integration
Equal opportunities
Personal independence

By ensuring newcomers in the Netherlands reach a minimum language level, the government believes it builds a stronger, more cohesive society — where everyone can contribute and communicate.

While the intention is positive, the process can be stressful and at times very bureaucratic.

That’s why having the right support — such as experienced teachers, a clear study plan and a service to help you succeed— can make a huge difference.
