How to Get Your Luxembourgish Course Reimbursed in Luxembourg

Table of Content

Introduction

Are you learning Luxembourgish as part of your journey towards Luxembourgish nationality? Here’s some good news: you may be able to get a large part of your Luxembourgish course costs reimbursed.

Eligible applicants can receive up to €750 back for qualifying Luxembourgish language classes. The €75 registration fee for the Sproochentest Lëtzebuergesch can also be reimbursed.

The reimbursement process is quite straightforward.

Here’s what you need to know.

How Much Can You Get Back?

The Luxembourg State can reimburse:
• Up to €750 for eligible Luxembourgish language classes
• €75 for the Sproochentest registration fee

For example, let’s say your Luxembourgish course costs €1,250:
Course price: €1,250
Maximum reimbursement: €750
Effective course cost: €500

So, if you qualify for the maximum reimbursement, a €1,250 Luxembourgish course could effectively cost you just €500.

Who Can Apply?

The reimbursement is available to eligible applicants who are in the process of acquiring Luxembourgish nationality.
Your Luxembourgish classes can be taken at the Institut national des langues Luxembourg (INLL) and/or with a training provider whose syllabus has been approved by the Minister responsible for education.
This means you don’t necessarily have to study at the INLL. Eligible courses offered by private language schools can also qualify for reimbursement.

What Is the Sproochentest?

If you’re preparing for Luxembourgish nationality, you’ve probably already heard about the Sproochentest Lëtzebuergesch.

The Sproochentest is the official Luxembourgish language test used for the relevant nationality procedure. It focuses on practical communication and your ability to speak and understand Luxembourgish.

There are two compulsory parts:

   Speaking – A2 Level

The speaking part checks whether you can communicate in Luxembourgish about familiar, everyday topics.

You have a conversation with an examiner and complete a speaking task using visual material.

The required speaking level is A2.

   Listening – B1 Level

The listening part checks how well you understand spoken Luxembourgish.

You listen to different recordings and answer questions about what you have heard.

The required listening level is B1.

The Sproochentest registration fee is €75, and eligible applicants can request reimbursement of this fee as well.

If you’re preparing for the test, Luxembourgish lessons can help you become more comfortable speaking, improve your listening skills and build confidence before the exam.

Have You Lived in Luxembourg for 20 Years or More?

There is also a specific option for adults who have been legally resident in Luxembourg for at least 20 years. For the relevant option procedure, eligible applicants can receive up to €750 back for an introductory Luxembourgish course of at least 24 hours, covering oral expression and comprehension.

What Do You Need for Reimbursement?

The paperwork is quite simple.
For your Luxembourgish classes, you’ll need documentation showing:

  • how many hours of classes you attended
  • how much you paid and
  • proof of your course/payment.

You’ll also need a bank details form (RIB) issued by your bank.
If you’re requesting reimbursement of the €75 Sproochentest registration fee, keep your INLL receipt or accepted proof of payment.
The easiest thing to do is simply keep your course and payment documents together while you’re studying.

How Do You Apply?

You’ll need to complete the official reimbursement form and include the required supporting documents.

The reimbursement request is submitted to the Service de la nationalité luxembourgeoise at the Ministry of Justice.
Always check the latest instructions on the official form before sending your application.

A Useful Tip from Someone Who Has Done It

Sometimes it helps to hear how the process worked for someone else.

One applicant who studied at the INLL shared that they printed their attendance records from their online INLL account and took them to the INLL reception desk to have them stamped. They then mailed the documents to the address they had been given.

According to the applicant, their reimbursement arrived in approximately one week.
Of course, this is one person’s experience and not a guaranteed processing time. But it shows that the reimbursement process can be quite straightforward when you have the right paperwork ready.

The main tip? Keep your receipts and attendance records.
